From the Office of Police Chief Raul Diaz
April 25, 2021 (Bay Harbor Islands) – Today, the Bay Harbor Islands Police Department hosted a Bicycle Safety Rodeo and Group Ride with the Chief; an event that had been an annual tradition here, before COVID-19. It was my first, as the Police Chief here, and I look forward to more. We may have been small in number, but the enthusiasm, joy and fun experienced by all was enormous.
I want to thank all the parents who brought their children to today's event. We appreciate your allowing us the opportunity to share knowledge that can help ensure a lifetime of safe bike riding habits. Riding a bike is fun, it’s good exercise, and it can give your child a sense of independence. But a bike is a vehicle, not a toy, so learning bicycle safety early is paramount.
I also wish to extend my gratitude to all the officers who participated today, from the Bay Harbor Police Department and neighboring municipalities. Bal Harbour, Indian Creek and Surfside Police Departments were all represented. Finally, I must thank Miami Bicycles Sales & Service for donating their time and expertise to the event and tuning up participants bikes. A well tuned bicycle makes for a much safer bike ride.
Summertime will mean more kids and adults riding bikes, so whether walking, riding or driving, please be careful, alert and courteous, and I hope to see you at the next Bicycle Safety Rodeo.
