Officer Scott Winters was a member of the Pompano Beach Police Department when he was shot and killed on the evening of July 29th, 1990. Prior to becoming a member of the Pompano Police Department, Officer Winters began his Florida Law Enforcement career with the Bay Harbor Islands Police Department in 1986. Officer Winters attended Bay Harbor Islands Elementary School as well.
Officer Winters and his K-9 partner, Baron, were searching for a suspect just south of Martin Luther King Boulevard following the rape and beating of a young Pompano Beach woman. Officer Winters captured the suspect, a struggle ensued, and the suspect grabbed Officer Winters' firearm and shot him. He succumbed to his wounds later that evening.
Officer Winters' killer was convicted of murder and sentenced to death.
The members of the Bay Harbor Islands Police Department, Pompano Beach Police Department, and the Broward Sheriff’s Office will never forget Officer Winters’ ultimate sacrifice and will continue to honor his memory and offer prayers for his family today and always.
